A megnevezés megtévesztő lehet, de az árpabor (barley wine) és búzabor (wheat wine) egy hosszú érlelésű, magas alkoholfokkal 8,5 - 12,2 % rendelkező sörtípus. Ebben a desszertsörnek is nevezett típusban a karamellmalátás édesség mindig domináns, a keserűség lehet magasabb (amerikai típus) illetve visszahúzódó, szinte alig észrevehető (angol típus). Gyakori a mazsolás, szőlős ízérzet. Színvilága a borostyán és mély vöröstől egészen a sötétbarnáig terjedhet. Az idő kimondottan jót tesz ezeknek a stílusoknak valamint rendkívül gyakori a hordóérlelés ezeknél a tételeknél. Legtöbbször vörösboros, rumos, whiskey hordókat választanak a főzdék, mivel jól kiegészítik az egyébként is égetett szeszes jegyekkel bíró alapsört.

Una barleywine al estilo inglés con cebada inglesa malteada al suelo, lúpulos nobles, y envejecida en bariccas de bourbon de 10-15 años, de un solo uso, durante 16 meses para ofrecer una experiencia de sabor artesanal compleja y sutil.
Aroma: Toffee, azúcar moreno y otros aromas dulces, notas de dátiles y frutas secas con cereales, aromas amaderados y alcohólicos.
Sabor: Definitivamente dulce, con una ligera dulzura persistente y sutil umami en un cuerpo medio con algo de carbonatación que hormiguea y calidez, ligeramente salivante.
