A selection of two wines from young winemakers in Australia and South Africa. First Brendan and Laura Carter from South Australia’s Unico Zelo, with their tropical Zibbibo dominant Esoterico, then Johan Mayer of Mother Rock’s unique
Chenin Blanc, released under the natural wine label ‘Brutal’.
The first wine is Unico Zelo Esoterico a Skin Contact white grape blend: Fiano, Zibbibo, Moscato Giallo, Gewurtztraminer, Greco – Riverland & Clare Valley. This has become one of our most cult-followed wines since we began. It’s not exactly white wine, nor red – many call it Orange or Amber wine…but we just call it Esoterico. No fining or filtration.
A gem of orange wine made with Fiano, Zibbibo, Moscato Giallo, Gewurtztraminer & Greco with grapes coming from Riverland & Clare Valley. This has become one of the wineries most cult-followed wines since they began making it. It is easy to see why as it remains elegant & fresh while evoking memories of mango & tropical fruit all finishing up with a juicy pithy tannin. Expect flavours of herbal beeswax combined with pineapple, dried mango & blood orange. A crowd friendly but complex orange wine. The second wine is Mother Rock Orange Wine. A small-batch, single-vineyard Chenin Blanc from the Paardeberg Mountain to the south of Malmesbury. 10 days skin-contact provides a gentle orange hue that translates on the palate to a juicy Seville orange character, with tropical kumquat and a chalky mouthfeel.
Mother Rock is a collaboration between winemaker Johan Meyer and Indigo founder Ben Henshaw. Johan, a star of the new South African wine scene, has developed strong relationships with some of the best grape growers across the Cape over the years, and as a result he has gained access to some of the region’s best fruit. Uncertified Organic grapes are fermented whole bunch with daily punch-downs for first 10 days, 2 weeks skin-contact then aged for 8 months on gross lees in 1,600 litre concrete eggs. Less
