Some of the oak casks at Samuel Smith’s date back more than a century with the individual oak staves being replaced by the Old Brewery coopers over the years. Gradually the casks soak in more & more of the character of the ale fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. Yorkshire Stingo is aged for at least a year, matured in these well-used oak casks in the brewery’s underground cellars deriving fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours, before being further naturally conditioned in bottle. LIMITED AVAILABILITY.

Best served at about 51°F (11°C).

Samuel Smith Stingo è la strong ale che viene affinata un intero anno in botti di quercia centenarie le quali vengono periodicamente visionate dai birrai della brewery. La Stingo – nome che nel dialetto dello Yorkshire sostituisce il termine strong – è una birra in simbiosi con il legno che l’ha contenuta, e che le dona caratteristiche uniche. Birra dal colore ambrato con riflessi color rame e dalla fine schiuma compatta, mediamente persistente e tendente all’ocra, la Stingo presenta un bouquet ricco e complesso. Frutta, uvetta, caramello, biscotto, budino e melassa richiamano alla mente un marsala; note che riemergono in bocca, accompagnate da lievi note acidule e da una chiusura leggermente amarognola Dotata di un corpo medio e di una moderata carbonatura, la Stingo è una birra che scalda e che evolve durante la bevuta.

Le Old Ale sono le tradizionali birre inglesi che maturano a lungo, spesso in botti di legno, e dall’importante grado alcolico. Presentano un equilibrio spostato verso le componenti maltate. Sono simili alle Wood Aged Beer, stile più generico che include birre che hanno la caratteristica di riposare in botti di legno, che abbiano o meno contenuto altre bevande alcoliche.

Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery è un birrificio indipendente inglese, il più antico dello Yorkshire. Fondato nel 1758, viene associato a Samuel Smith, che lo acquistò e lo fece diventare un punto di riferimento dell’economia locale.

La fama del birrificio venne anche omaggiata dalla penna di Charles Dickens, che lo menzionò in suo romanzo. Samuel Smith prosegue la produzione di birra di qualità secondo i canoni della tradizione anglosassone; nel birrificio viene utilizzata la coltura di lievito da oltre due secoli e alcune attrezzature antiche, come le vasche per la fermentazione.

La gamma produttiva include numerose birre, la maggior parte delle quali legata a stili inglesi, e birre più ricercate, oltre a due tipologie di sidro. Alcune birre di Samuel Smith sono diventate dei riferimenti per lo stile birrario che rappresentano.

Old Ale madurada en barricas de Roble. Esta Old Ale recibió su nombre del apodo perdido hace mucho tiempo de cervezas añejadas y completamente maduras: Stingo. Tal vez sea una simplificación de "picar", que es como los británicos describían el sabor de tal cerveza en el siglo XVIII. Stingo es la quintaesencia de la producción de Samuel Smith. Después de la fermentación en Yorkshire Squares, la cerveza se madura en barricas de roble. Estas barricas también se utilizan en la cervecería para el transporte de Cask Ale, que forma una microflora especial en su interior. El tamaño relativamente pequeño de las barricas les permite transmitir notas de madera, whisky y vino a la cerveza durante un tiempo de envejecimiento relativamente corto. 8,0% ABV Formato: 550ml

SAMUEL SMITH'S YORKSHIRE STINGO is een strong English ale. De diepgang die dit bier krijgt door de vergisting op stenen bakken wordt nog eens verder versterkt door het gebruik van houten vaten. Deze ale casks worden al jaren gebruikt, sommige zijn al meer dan honderd jaar oud. Ze hebben dan ook nog echt een cooper in dienst die af en toe de houten staven vervangt, als het hout ''op'' is. Het bier heeft tonen van rijp fruit, vooral banaan, hout en een gedroogd fruit karakter van de gisting. Het is een mooi bier, maar dient wel met respect gedronken te worden. Het is geen allemansvriend zal ik maar zeggen.
