La historia detrás de la fábrica de cerveza comienza con su fundador Balthazar De Landtsheer, que nació en Baasrode en 1773 y estableció la fábrica de cerveza "De Halve Maan". Su hijo, Eduard De Landtsheer, nacido en 1808 y ex alcalde de Baasrode, se hizo cargo del timón.
En 1839 su nieto, Emmanuel De Landtsheer, se mudó a la casa-granja-cervecería existente "’t Meuleke" en Baasrode-Zuid. Se cambió el nombre a "Brewery De Zon" (El Sol) (de ahí el color naranja que se ofrece con tanta fuerza en estilo de la casa de la fábrica de cerveza).
El negocio tuvo tanto éxito que en su momento se dieron por vencidos agricultura y la elaboración de cerveza se convirtió en su principal actividad.
