Theakston Old Peculier

Theakston Old Peculier è la birra più prestigiosa dello storico birrificio dello Yorkshire, da molti definita una birra leggendaria (e oggetto di numerosi tentativi di riproduzione). Questa strong ale in classico stile britannico si presenta con il tipico colore rosso rubino che vira su toni più scuri, con un cappello di schiuma marrone scura persistente. Al naso risaltano le note di pane e caramello, unitamente a caffè ed importanti sentori di frutta (banana e ciliegia). In bocca risulta cremosa e morbida, si percepiscono note tostate ed erbacee che nel complesso conferiscono un carattere ben definito. Birra dal piacevolissimo finale, la Theakston Old Peculier rimane una di quelle birre da provare assolutamente almeno una volta nella vita, prodotta sin dal 1890.

Con il termine British Strong Ale si definiscono numerosi sottostili di birre, associate dal tenore alcolico importante ma mai elevato (in genere al di sotto di 8 ABV). Sono birre della grande tradizione anglosassone, ideali prodotti da maturazione e dal corpo deciso.

Theakston è uno storico birrificio inglese fondato nel 1827 nella cittadina di Masham, nello Yorkshire Dales, grazie a Robert Theakston, agricoltore e birraio che inizia a produrre birra che vende direttamente presso i locali adibiti a brewpub. Il sito ha un importante valore storico: 0Masham è infatti la sede della Corte del Peculiar, creata per il volere dell’Arcivescovo dello Yorkshire.

Nel 1875 viene fondato ufficialmente il birrificio: grazie all’aumento della produzione e al notevole riscontro da parte del pubblico, la fama di Theakston e delle sue birre comincia a circolare per tutto il paese. La crescente richiesta convince la proprietà ad acquisire un nuoto sito produttivo – la Carlisle Brewery – ma l’investimento porta più problemi che successi, decretando l’inizio di un declino che termina con la cessione di Theakston al gruppo Scottish & Newcastle.

Nel 2004 un clamoroso evento: gli eredi di Robert Theakston ritornano in possesso della brewery di famiglia, acquisendo nuovamente la proprietà: Theakston ritorna a casa e diventa negli anni uno dei più amati e importanti birrifici tradizionali dell’intera Inghilterra.

Old Peculier is possibly one of the country’'s most well-known and loved ales. This unique, beautiful brew is often imitated but never matched and is sold literally all over the world. With countless awards to its credit, it is something of which every Briton can be very proud and is the epitome of the greatest of British brewing tradition. In the early years of the modern brewing era, about two hundred years ago, many brewers produced a dark, strong ‘stock’ beer in the winter months, to provide a base amount of fermented beer to add to beers brewed in the rather more volatile months of the summer. Old Peculier probably owes its origins to this. The name pays tribute to the unique ecclesiastical status of Masham as a ‘Court of the Peculier’ and is also reference to the strong characteristic of the beer! For many years it was affectionately referred to as Yorkshire’s ‘Lunatic’s Broth’. Old Peculier is a beautiful, yet very simple beer, brewed using a very generous blend of finest pale, crystal and roasted barley with two bitter hops combined with the majestic and noble ‘Fuggle’ hop to produce a beer of awesome full-bodied flavour with subtle cherry and rich fruit overtones. It tastes superb when accompanied by rich stews, strong cheeses and sweet puddings.
