This is Simple Things’ first beer using achingly fashionable New Zealand hops. It’s a hazy Pale Ale with notes of pineapple, peach, mandarin orange and gooseberry in a light and smooth body.
Simple Things say “What is it with New Zealand hops? It’s the same with the grapes that grow there I guess; they’re really punchy, but also kind of refined and definitely make for delicious drinks.
“When we (finally) got on board the hazy train and permitted ourselves to use the same juicy hops as everyone else, we went to the big hitters from the US first. And we remain delighted with the results! US Pale is a beer we’re now selling a lot of and a staple in our own beer diet. I was keen to get in amongst the NZ varieties though, and right from the start had high hopes for NZ Pale, the second in our Regulars series. Safe to say, it delivers.
“Nelson does that NZ thing of contributing refinement with the volume turned up to 11. It is such an excellent hop! Motueka is a bit quieter but also packed full of the flavours you love to see. And Nectaron – a new-ish arrival but seems to be one of those magic ones that makes everything you put it into taste awesome.
“So we have a 4.8% juicy, tropical fruit-bomb.
“Grapefruit pith on the nose with a backdrop of pineapple and mango; I wasn’t expecting a layer of dankness but it’s there and is maybe what I love most about this beer! Peach, mandarin orange and gooseberry are all in the mix too so yes, we have sweetness but there’s a raspy edge to provide balance and keep us going back for more. And all at less than 5%. It feels like cheating.”
