This strong lager of German origin combines the satisfying complexity of a Bock with the lighter, refreshing qualities of a Helles. Pale amber in colour, there’s no mistaking the hallmark fresh baked/lightly toasted bread aroma, along with berry fruit and hints of floral and very light peppery spice. Full bodied but not boozy; rich and rewarding but soft and smooth with gentle, rounded bitterness and a crisp, dry finish.

SimpleThings say “It has to be said that we do German beers in our own way… we don’t have massive horizontal lagering tanks (yet). We do however use premium German malts, hops and yeast, and we do put a lot of time and effort into getting the absolute best from them. For this one we gave a lot of thought to what a Helles Bock is all about, and how we could create a beer worthy of the style in our small brewery in the south of Glasgow.

“Pale and light but strong and malty is pretty much the brief for this style. Make it rich and complex but easy to drink. That’s more or less the MO for the brewery to be honest, so we’re in our comfort zone straight away. We went for a blend of Pilsner, Maris Otter and Munich malts to achieve this – tons of character without overstepping the mark. Hops have to be noble – Tettnang, you’re up. Our curveball, if you like, was to use the Koln yeast, at a low fermentation temp. So there’s a bit of fermentation character here which might cause a BJCP judge to drop his or her pretzel in alarm, but it’s deliberate, and it works. A subtle fruitiness that melds with the Munich and helps to balance the bitterness. It’s our take on the style.”
