Taste-wise it has a really balanced wine-like acidity, proper fruitiness, and plenty of spice/earthiness with a little funk to it. Together with firm but rounded tannins, some minerality, it’s a very vibrant wild ale. Tommie’s favourite vintage so far.

8.2% Regularly we bring out a new vintage of Druif — it’s the beer where it all started. A wild ale made with organic red wine grapes (harvested in 2021, Mátra region, Hungary). This year’s vintage is made solely with Kékfrankos grapes. A perfect grape variety which blends very well with our wild ales. We used a blend of different wild ales (approx. aged for two years in wooden barrels), to let referment and macerated further for another year on the wine grapes. The long maceration with the grapes gives the beer more structure and layeredness in taste, since the skins of the grapes have had the time to release their tannins and their taste. With this vintage we tried to focus on the interaction of the slightly more pronounced bitterness and delicate fruity aromas from the aged hops we used in the beer, and on the tannins from the wine grapes. In our opinion, this resulted in a very well balanced wild ale, blurring the boundaries between beer and (natural) wine perfectly. In its aroma, Druif (2022) showcases strawberries and ripe peaches together with dark cherries, a slight hint of almond and a touch of wood from the oak barrels. Taste-wise it starts with the typical dark cherry and blackberry notes of Kékfrankos. This bold fruitiness is accompanied by a gentle sourness and a fairly dry, almost port-like finish. In the aftertaste the tannic part of blackberry seeds and almond is present, together with a touch of creamy oak. At this moment the balance between the base beer and the fruit is perfect, but this vintage has a good potential for ageing in the bottle. In a year or more, the tannins will soften, and the base beer and the barrel’s taste will integrate even better, but in honesty, we recommend to drink our fruited beers up to 3-4 years after bottling date, to get the right expression of the fruit itself. Store our beers upright or lying down in a cool, dark place. Our beers are best enjoyed between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius.

Tommie Sjef Druif es lanzada regularmente porque es la primera cerveza que elaboraron. Esta versión de 2022 es una Wild Ale elaborada con uvas de vino tinto orgánicas (cosechadas en 2021, región de Mátra, Hungría). La añada de este año está hecha exclusivamente con uvas Kékfrankos y una mezcla de diferentes ales salvajes (aproximadamente envejecidas durante dos años en barricas de madera) para refermentar y macerar durante otro año más con las uvas. La larga maceración con las uvas le da a la cerveza más estructura y complejidad en el sabor, ya que las pieles de las uvas han tenido tiempo de liberar sus taninos y su sabor. Con esta añada, intentamos centrarnos en la interacción de la amargura ligeramente más pronunciada y los delicados aromas frutales de los lúpulos añejos que utilizamos en la cerveza, y en los taninos de las uvas. En nuestra opinión, esto resultó en una Wild Ale muy bien equilibrada, difuminando perfectamente los límites entre la cerveza y el vino (natural).

En su aroma, Druif (2022) muestra fresas y melocotones maduros junto con cerezas oscuras, un ligero toque de almendra y una pincelada de madera de las barricas de roble. En cuanto al sabor, comienza con las notas típicas de cereza oscura y mora de las uvas Kékfrankos. Esta audaz frutalidad está acompañada por una suave acidez y un final bastante seco, casi similar al oporto. En el retrogusto, se perciben los taninos de las semillas de mora y almendra, junto con un toque de roble cremoso.

En este momento, el equilibrio entre la cerveza base y la fruta es perfecto, pero esta añada tiene un buen potencial para el envejecimiento en la botella. En un año o más, los taninos se suavizarán y la cerveza base y el sabor del barril se integrarán aún mejor, pero sinceramente, recomendamos beber nuestras cervezas afrutadas hasta 3-4 años después de la fecha de embotellado, para obtener la mejor expresión de la fruta.

Almacénala en posición vertical o acostada en un lugar fresco y oscuro. Para consumir entre 12 y 14 grados Celsius.

Almost each year we bring out a new vintage. This year we took a different approach on making Druif. We started with a blend of older beers (approximately 2 years in the barrel) refermented with Kékfrankos grapes, and aged in our oldest foudre for quite some time. Before bottling we blended this base with spontaneously fermented wine from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes we made in 2018 and aged in smaller burgundy barrels.

Druif 2020 has elderflower, blackberry, and light strawberry notes, but also a touch of creamy oak, and a little earthiness. Taste-wise it has a really balanced wine-like acidity, proper fruitiness, and plenty of spice/earthiness with a little funk to it.
