Yes, it’s clear that Duivelsbier didn’t get its name by coincidence or by mistake.
In 1833, a thirsty pilgrim arrived in Halle and without any inhibition he gobbled the alluring ale.
Thunderstruck by its formidable potency, he cried out: “Surely, this beer has sprung from the
clutches of the devil himself!”
To this day, we are still serenaded by the echoes of that man’s testimony and we still serve a robust brew to stoke towering tales in good company.
Devils Beer is a heavy dark beer.
Since 1883 it has been brewed in Halle, originally mainly as a special beer for the pilgrims.
The taste is associated with certain heavy abbey beers and betrays the use of special dark malts and candy sugar.
Devil is hopped with 2 types of aroma hop and is lightly seasoned. The aroma is slightly fruity, with a coffee and chocolate-like note.
