Witbier’s origins can be traced back to the 11th century. This style was amongst the first beers to contain hops. The name ‘Wit,’ which means white, is derived from its cloudy pale appearance. It was very popular in its beginnings
Europe, but by the 1800s it had almost completely disappeared. In 1955 the last witbier brewery in the world shutdown. It was not until 1966, that Pierre Cells, who had worked in a witbier brewery in his youth, decided to bring back witbier with his own recipe, Hoegaarden. Hoegaarden was so successful that soon after other breweries in Belgium, and the United States started to reproduce witbiers.
Inspired by the Belgian Witbier, the 961 Witbier has 5.3% ABV. We use Lebanese grown un-malted wheat, coriander seed, and orange peel which contribute to its sweet and spicy aroma. The light acidity, and low bitterness of this unfiltered beer makes it perfect for those who prefer a light and sweet beer. This beer has natural yeast sediment in the bottle, so do not be put off by its mistiness. Less
